14-Year-Old Boy Passes Away During 5K Run

Knox MacEwen, a 14-year-old from Davie, Florida, tragically passed away on November 4, 2023, after collapsing during a 5K run, according to NBC 6 South Florida.

Knox was a dedicated member of the Junior Reserve Officers’ Training Corps (JROTC) at Western High School. Sadly, his life was cut short when he suffered a cardiac arrest while participating in a 5K event organized by the JROTC program.

NBC Miami reports that Knox was rushed to Memorial Hospital Miramar, where he was later pronounced dead. The school’s principal, Jimmy Arrojo, shared the heartbreaking news with the school community, expressing his deepest condolences to Knox’s family, friends, teachers, and classmates. “I ask our Wildcat community to rally around the family in prayer and support during this time of deep sorrow. Grief counselors will be available on campus this week for anyone needing assistance,” Arrojo said.

JROTC, a federal high school program sponsored by the U.S. Armed Forces, focuses on character development, teaching students self-discipline, self-confidence, and leadership skills.

Knox was also an active member of Crossway Church in Cooper City, where he was cherished by many. Pastor Jon Elswick reflected on the impact of Knox’s loss, noting, “When you have a tragedy like this, and someone as loved as Knox, there are ripple effects throughout our church community. Knox was the best of us—a loving, caring, and funny kid.”
