Candace Cameron Bure Criticizes Paris Olympics’ Opening Ceremony as ‘Disgusting’

Candace Cameron Bure is voicing her concerns over the Paris Olympics’ opening ceremony, which she found offensive.

In an Instagram post, the Full House actress expressed her dismay at what she perceived as a disrespectful portrayal of Leonardo da Vinci’s The Last Supper. “Watching such a significant event and seeing the opening ceremonies mock the Christian faith with their interpretation was disgusting,” Bure said.

A devout Christian, Bure shared that although she respects the Olympics and knows many athletes, she felt deeply saddened by this year’s ceremony. “It makes me mad, but more than that, it makes me sad for souls,” she added.

She encouraged her followers to remain steadfast in sharing their faith, noting that even those who are indifferent to such issues need to hear the gospel. “Don’t get tired of doing good. Keep sharing the gospel,” Bure said, urging believers to stay active in their faith despite opposition.

In response to the backlash, Thomas Jolly, the artistic director of the ceremony, explained to French news channel BFM TV that there was no intention to mock anyone. “The idea was to have a celebration connected to the gods of Olympus,” Jolly clarified, emphasizing that the goal was not to disrespect any group.

Anne Descamps, a spokesperson for the 2024 Paris Olympics, apologized to those who were offended. “We never intended to disrespect any religious group. Thomas Jolly aimed to celebrate community tolerance,” Descamps said at a press conference, adding, “If people took offense, we are truly sorry.”
