Every parent dreams of seeing their children grow up healthy and happy. For Karen Rodas and Paul Bybkin, that dream was tested in the most heartbreaking way.
Their joy was short-lived when their son, Nathaniel, was born with Polycystic Kidney Disease (PKD), a condition that causes cysts to form in the kidneys and often leads to kidney failure. Tragically, Nathaniel lived only 36 hours.
In 2013, Karen and Paul welcomed a daughter, Maddy. Their worst fears came true when Maddy was diagnosed with the same condition as her late brother. Her swollen abdomen made it appear as though she was 9 months pregnant.
However, there was hope. Maddy’s father, Paul, was a match for a kidney donation. After enduring numerous hospital visits and spending much of her time sleeping, Maddy underwent life-saving surgery with her father as the donor.
Karen, reflecting on the surgery, said, “With Paul and Maddy, two of my most precious souls, going under the knife, my nerves were a wreck.” Thankfully, the operation was a success, and both Maddy and Paul recovered well.
“Daddy’s kidney has saved our little girl,” Karen said. “Now, she has boundless energy. Her tummy, which used to be so swollen, is now just a little rounded, and she is a happy, healthy two-year-old.
Paul, on his part, views his donation as a natural part of fatherhood. “We have been on a rollercoaster – but any father would have done what I did, donating my kidney to Maddy. It’s part of being a parent,” he said.
Though Maddy might need another transplant in 25 years, for now, she has many years ahead to live life to the fullest.
We are thrilled for this family and wish them all the best. Share this heartwarming story with others to spread joy and hope.
Love and Peace.
