His jaw bore the brunt of the blast, a lung collapsed, and he teetered on the brink of mortality upon reaching Camp Bastion, declared P.E.A. – “patient expired on arrival.”

In the arduous journey that ensued, Carpenter endured a staggering forty surgeries. His valor did not go unnoticed; he was bestowed with the Purple Heart for his gallantry, and the nation’s highest military honor, the Medal of Honor, was conferred upon him by President Barack Obama.

Today, Carpenter stands retired from active service, channeling his resilience towards academic pursuits at the University of South Carolina.
